University Governance

The University of Stirling was established in 1967 by Royal Charter. The Charter outlines the role of the University and how the University should be governed. In accordance with the Charter, the Court is the governing body of the University. It has overall responsibility for the management of the University’s resources, the ongoing strategic direction of the University and the approval of major developments. It also receives regular reports from Executive Officers on the day to day operation of the University's business. Academic Council is the body responsible for the academic work of the University (teaching and research) and for the regulation and superintendence of the education, discipline and welfare of the students of the University. While Court has the final responsibility for governing the University, on academic matters it will normally only act on the recommendation of Academic Council.

Court and Academic Council are supported by a number of committees, from which they receive recommendations about all aspects of the University’s business. The committees meet on a regular basis throughout the year to consider a wide range of issues. Committees include:

  • Academic Advancement and Promotions Committee
  • Admissions, Progress and Awards Committee
  • Audit Committee
  • Ethics Committee
  • Honorary Degrees Committee
  • Combined Joint Negotiating and Consultative Committee
  • Quality Enhancement Committee
  • Research, Knowledge and Exchange Committee
  • Joint Policy, Planning and Resources Committee
