Role of Court

The University of Stirling Court met for the first time on 25 March 1968 with the following membership:

  • Privy Council appointments - Rt Hon Lord Wheatley, KW Atchley Esq., Dr AAL Challis
  • Principal and Vice Chancellor - Dr TL Cottrell
  • Nominated by the Chancellor - W MacFarlane Gray Esq.
  • Appointed by the Academic Council - Professor AD Bain, Professor RP Bell, Professor TA Dunn, Professor FGT Holliday
  • Appointed by the Academic Assembly - Dr JM Howie, Dr J Trainer
  • Provost of the Burgh of Stirling - Dr RD McIntyre
  • Convenor, County Council of Stirling - AK Davidson Esq.
  • Appointed by the Conference - Sir George Wilson
  • Honorary President of the Student Association - Vacant

At this meeting, the Court elected Lord Wheatley, the Lord Justice-Clerk, as its first Chairman.

 

Court remit and responsiblities

Since then, Court has been responsible for the following key areas:

  • Mission, vision and strategy of the University
  • University students and staff
  • Financial systems and control environment
  • Corporate governance
  • Senior management of the University

These areas are defined in more detail in the Statement of Primary Responsibilities.

 

Court meetings

Court meets four times over the course of the academic year. The dates for the 2008/09 session are:

  • Monday 20 October 2008
  • Monday 22 December 2008
  • Monday 23 March 2009
  • Monday 22 June 2009
